What is Luma AI?

Luma’s Dream Machine is the company’s new iOS and web app for generating both images and videos using AI. Instead of being just another image generator, it combines two models under one roof: Photon, their image model optimized for high detail and speed, and Ray2, their large-scale video model built for realistic motion and logical sequences. Together, they give you a system that can turn text or references into visuals that feel production-ready. The app is built to cut down on the usual trial-and-error. You don’t need to craft elaborate prompts to get usable results. A short request like “a foggy ice cavern in Norway” or “make it 90s vibe” is enough. You can also bring in your own images, styles, or characters and remix them across different contexts, which makes it useful if you want consistency in a series of outputs. What stands out is how it handles video creation. You can set start and end frames, extend clips, or even loop them. Motion is more believable than in older AI video tools, with better lighting, physics, and camera movement. For stills, the image-to-video pipeline is sharp and detailed, with strong adherence to instructions and even accurate text rendering. The workflow is geared toward exploration. There’s a “Brainstorm” feature that pushes alternative ideas if you’re stuck, and you can organize projects with “boards” to keep track of multiple themes. Sharing is integrated, including remix options so others can take your creation and rework it. This isn’t a free tool. Dream Machine runs on a credit-based subscription system. Old subscribers have been migrated into equivalent Plus or Pro plans. Access is available now on iOS and the web, with Android missing for now. If you used older Luma products like Genie or Capture, those assets are handled separately in the main Luma app, not Dream Machine. For indie creators, filmmakers, designers, or even casual users who just want to experiment, the draw is speed and flexibility. You can ideate quickly, refine without losing hours, and produce assets that are closer to usable quality than most of the current crop of AI visual tools.
