What is Sora?

OpenAI released Sora 2 in late September 2025, and it’s already sitting at number one in Apple’s App Store. This is their second-generation video model that generates short clips with matching audio from text prompts. Think of it as what happens when you scale up video training the way they scaled up language models with GPT. The physics engine here actually works. Water flows the way water should. Objects bounce, tumble, and interact with gravity like they’re supposed to. Audio is baked in. You don’t need separate tools to add sound effects or background noise. Generate a city street and you get traffic hum and distant voices. A mountain scene comes with wind and crunching snow. The Cameo feature is interesting. Record yourself once in the app, and Sora 2 can insert you into any generated scene. Your face, your voice, your mannerisms. You control who gets to use your likeness and can revoke access anytime. OpenAI’s team tested this internally and said people started making friends across departments. It’s a communication tool disguised as a video generator. Multi-shot editing lets you string together multiple prompts into one coherent sequence. You’re not limited to single clips. You can build out short narratives, scene by scene, without jumping to external editing software. The app itself is a bit like TikTok but everything’s AI-generated. Vertical scrolling, social feed, remix culture. OpenAI says they’re not optimizing for time spent scrolling, which is either refreshing or naive depending on how cynical you are. They’ve built in wellbeing check-ins and natural language controls for what shows up in your feed. It’s free to start, with “generous limits” that depend on compute availability. ChatGPT Pro subscribers get access to Sora 2 Pro, a higher-quality experimental version. API access is coming but not here yet. The original Sora Turbo still exists if you prefer it. For entrepreneurs, this thing moves fast. You can prototype marketing videos, create product demos, or generate social content without hiring a crew. The multi-shot capability means you can storyboard concepts and test creative directions before committing budget to real production. Cameos let you personalize customer videos at scale. Home users get filmmaking tools that used to require film school and expensive gear. Families can star in their own generated adventures. Creators can produce social content that stands out. The learning curve is basically nonexistent if you can write a sentence. OpenAI blocks photorealistic person uploads initially and has heavy moderation around minors. But deepfakes, copyright issues, and the flood of AI-generated content clogging feeds are real concerns. Distinguishing authentic media from generated material gets harder every month. That matters if you’re building a brand or just trying to trust what you see online. Sam Altman called this the “ChatGPT for creativity” moment. That might be hype, but the tool does democratize video production in ways that weren’t possible a year ago. Whether that’s purely good depends on how people use it and what safeguards actually hold up under pressure.
